28 October 2008 No Comment

Enzo Ferrari founded Scuderia Ferrari (Ferrari Stable) in 1929. The company based in Maranello, Italy, began its association with the world of motorsports by sponsoring drivers and manufactured race cars until it began production of the Ferrari racing cars in 1947.

Enzo Ferrari was born on February 20 1898 in Turin, Italy and died on August 14 1988 at the age of 90 in Maranello, Italy.

Ferrari has been a part of Formula One racing since the very first Formula 1 World Championship in 1950. The teams first victory was at the 1951 British Grand Prix.

The early days were actually more successful at the Le Mans 24-hour event where Ferrari racing cars won 14 times including six on the trot from 1960-65.

Ferrari enjoyed sparodic success in racing during the 1950s and 1960s which eventually forced him to sell a stake in the company to Fiat. In 1969 the Italian car manufacturer increased their stake to 50% and in 1988 they increased their holding to 90%.

Ironically, Enzo Ferrari passed away during the 1988 racing season when the McLaren-Honda team was dominating. They won every race that season except for one, the Italian Grand Prix where the Flying Red Ferrari of Gerhard Burger would lead home his teammate Michele Alboreto in a Ferrari one two finish.
